Jack Dempsey

Jack Dempsey was born on June 24, 1895 in Manassa, Colorado.  He was raised in a poor family and had to travel around the country with his family to find work for his father.  He dropped out of grade school to find work for himself.  Dempsey moved out at age 16 ready to make a better life for himself. He frequently had to sleep in homeless camps and travel underneath trains because he had very little money.  Jack as strong and powerful and discovered that he was good at fighting.  He would go into bars to pick fights to earn a little money.
He would say "I can't sing and I can't dance ,but I can lick any SOB in this house." If people accepted his challenge they would wager against who would win.  Dempsey's boxing recorded is not know, because he had a couple of names he went by when he boxed.  He went by Kid Blackie which he used till 1916.  He first appeared as Jack Dempsey in 1914 as a middleweight  boxer.  While the United States went in WW1 Dempsey worked at a shipyard and even enlisted in the army but was turned down.  Jack was the h

The four MAIN causes of war

Militarism where a nation believes in having a powerful army to have control over there people.
Alliances where nations join together during a time of war to fight against other nations who are a threat towards them.
Imperialism where a large nation takes over smaller less powerful nations for a economical gain.
Nationalism where a country takes great pride in their nation and many people would go to war to expand their nation.

In 1914 the Archduke Franz Fredinand who was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne was shot and kill why a terrorist group called the Black Hand. The assassination took place with a knowledge of Serbian officials who hoped to start war against the Austro-Hungarian empire.  If Austria attacked Serbia the Russians would help back them up.  So they had to get help from the Germans allies.
This led to the start of ww1.

1. Lusitania 1915 supply ship sent to Britain but was sunk by a German U-boat.
2.Sussex Pledge 1916 met the foreign policy goals of both Germany and Wilson by keeping the US out of the war longer.
3. Zimmermann note 1917 note sent from Germany to Mexico but was intercepted by Britain and sent to the US which made them get into the war.
4. Unrestricted submarine warfare 1917 Germany continued trying to cut off the British by using their uboats.

Letter home

Dear Mother and Father

I know I haven't written back in a long while.  I'm sorry for the delay, but we have been very busy due to all the battles going on in Europe.  I am an ambulance drive for the British Red Cross and I have been driving to the battle fields retrieving wounded soldiers.  It's a hard job to see all these men like this, but it is a job that someone had to do.  As of now I'm back in Britain on a short leave, but ill be head back to Germany within a few days.  We are slowly taking the war, but the Germans are fighting back hard.  The trenches go for miles and many people have been dieing from poisonous gases.  We do wear gas masks but for some people they don't work or they aren't put on in time.  I hope to come back soon but i don't know how long the war will go on for.  Please write back as soon as you can.    3/5/1917

Easter Rebellion Ireland

The Easter Rising also known as the Easter Rebellion Ireland.  The rebellion started on Monday 24 April 1916 and lasted for 6 days.  It was Organized by seven members of the Military Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood.  Many people joined the Irish Citizen Army which they then seized key locations in Dublin and claimed the Irish Republic independent from Britain.

The Rising was suppressed after heavy fighting, and its leaders were court-martialled and executed.  Support for republicanism continued to rise in Ireland as a result of the ongoing war in Europe and the Middle East. In December 1918 republicans won 73 seats out of 105 in the 1918 General Election in the British Parliament. In the total of 6 days 254 people where killed and 2,217 people where wounded.

The Jungle

To survive at packingtown you have to have strength and a good work ethic.  It was a hard job working in the packing plants, the owners pushed hard to get as much money as possible.  For someone like Jurgis who had a good work ethic this job was well suited for him

The plant owner worked his men long and hard. He was trying to make as much money as he could and he didn't care hoe he did it.  There were ranks and grades of men that would drive each other to a physical limit. The men who were in the same rank fought against each other to keep their jobs.

What does Sinclair mean when he says, "...there was no place in it where a man counted for anything against a dollar....?"  This passage is talking about how there was no decency or any honesty.

Since this has happened the government has been involved in the processing of all food and drugs.  in 1906 they created the meat inspection act.  This made it mandatory for the government to inspect every piece of meat that is being used.  They inspect all livestock before slaughter, after they have died and when they are being packed up.

The Sinking of the Maine

On February 15, 1898 the United State's most advanced battle ship sank due to what most people thought was from the Spanish.   The sinking of the Maine was one of the most important events in the Spanish American war.  The Maine was Americas most advanced and expensive ship for its time.  The US sent the Maine to Cuba to fight against the Spanish fleets, but during the fight the Maine exploded killing 75% of the crew.  To this day no one knows why the Maine blew up, but  some say it was from a Spanish ship or an undetected fire from one of the coal bunkers.  Today the ship lays at the bottom of the Strait of Florida.

Since the Americans thought that the Spanish blew up their ship they went to war with them starting the Spanish American war.  The Americans were furious about Spain sinking their ship, and created one of the most famous sayings.  "Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain" this cry was heard throughout America and was an excuse for America to get involved in the war against Spain.
