U-2 Incident

On the morning of May 1, 1960, the Soviet shot down a CIA pilot Francis Gary Powers, who had been on a secret mission to fly over Russia.  After Powers was shot down the United States had to wait to see the fate of the pilot and the U-2 program. President Eisenhower extremely nervous due to the rapid growth of the Soviets technological achievements.  The Soviet's had developed the technology to send a thermonuclear bomb across continents (ICBM). The United State's had created a secret military base in Pakistan where they could launch the U-2 planes to fly over Russia.  On May 1st Francis Powers mission was to fly from Peshawar the secret air base over Russia and land in Bodø Norway, but he was shot down after he flew over the Chelyabinsk-65 plutonium production facility.

Powers was shot down by a SAM (surface to air missile) which was guided by Mikhail Voronov.  He was able to eject from the plane before it was destroyed, but when he landed he was captured and so was his U-2 spy plane with all of it top secret cameras intacked.  Powers was interigated by the KGB till he told them what he was doing flying over Russia. This led to him serving three year in jail and seven years of hard labor for espionage. He was released February 10th, 1962 where the US and Russia did a spy swap in Berlin, Germany.  When Powers returned to the US he was criticized by the CIA for not hitting the self destruct button on his plane and for getting captured, since he had a silver dollar that had a lethal dose of saxitoxen

Powers later went on to fly experimental aircraft for Lockheed from 1963-1970. He was fired from Lockheed in 1970 because he co-wrote a book called Operation Overflight: A Memoir of the U-2 incident. They said it cast a negative piblicity on the CIA which Lockheed worked for. Powers later became a helicopter pilot for the KNBC where he was the "telecopter". He died in 1977 in that helicopter, it's fuel gauge was repaired without powers knowing. After running out of fuel powers tried to land but saw kids playing in the area he was going to crash so he directed the helicopter somewhere where it crashed.  If not for powers last minute action to save the kids he might have landed safely.

The four MAIN causes of war

Militarism where a nation believes in having a powerful army to have control over there people.
Alliances where nations join together during a time of war to fight against other nations who are a threat towards them.
Imperialism where a large nation takes over smaller less powerful nations for a economical gain.
Nationalism where a country takes great pride in their nation and many people would go to war to expand their nation.

In 1914 the Archduke Franz Fredinand who was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne was shot and kill why a terrorist group called the Black Hand. The assassination took place with a knowledge of Serbian officials who hoped to start war against the Austro-Hungarian empire.  If Austria attacked Serbia the Russians would help back them up.  So they had to get help from the Germans allies.
This led to the start of ww1.

1. Lusitania 1915 supply ship sent to Britain but was sunk by a German U-boat.
2.Sussex Pledge 1916 met the foreign policy goals of both Germany and Wilson by keeping the US out of the war longer.
3. Zimmermann note 1917 note sent from Germany to Mexico but was intercepted by Britain and sent to the US which made them get into the war.
4. Unrestricted submarine warfare 1917 Germany continued trying to cut off the British by using their uboats.

Letter home

Dear Mother and Father

I know I haven't written back in a long while.  I'm sorry for the delay, but we have been very busy due to all the battles going on in Europe.  I am an ambulance drive for the British Red Cross and I have been driving to the battle fields retrieving wounded soldiers.  It's a hard job to see all these men like this, but it is a job that someone had to do.  As of now I'm back in Britain on a short leave, but ill be head back to Germany within a few days.  We are slowly taking the war, but the Germans are fighting back hard.  The trenches go for miles and many people have been dieing from poisonous gases.  We do wear gas masks but for some people they don't work or they aren't put on in time.  I hope to come back soon but i don't know how long the war will go on for.  Please write back as soon as you can.    3/5/1917

Easter Rebellion Ireland

The Easter Rising also known as the Easter Rebellion Ireland.  The rebellion started on Monday 24 April 1916 and lasted for 6 days.  It was Organized by seven members of the Military Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood.  Many people joined the Irish Citizen Army which they then seized key locations in Dublin and claimed the Irish Republic independent from Britain.

The Rising was suppressed after heavy fighting, and its leaders were court-martialled and executed.  Support for republicanism continued to rise in Ireland as a result of the ongoing war in Europe and the Middle East. In December 1918 republicans won 73 seats out of 105 in the 1918 General Election in the British Parliament. In the total of 6 days 254 people where killed and 2,217 people where wounded.
